The 73rd annual winter championship show of the South African National Cage Bird Association was recently presented in Centurion from 11 to 13 July 2013. Indaba Nyoni Club, in collaboration with Gloster, Posture and Fife Club, Gouldian Finch Society, Jacaranda Budgie Society, Pretoria Cage Bird Club, Suikerbosrand Canary Club and Transvaal Zebra Finch Society combined their skills and resources to present the show.

Some 2 470 show birds ranging from canaries through foreign finches, parrots, and budgies, small game birds as well as indigenous South African birds were entered by 125 exhibitors from as far and wide as Pietermaritzburg and Cape Town. One of the canary judges travelled from Gaborone, Botswana. The standard of entries was excellent and interest shown by the public was high.

Seven year old Divan van Rooyen stole the hearts of many exhibitors when he was awarded a special prize for being the youngest competitor on the show.  A number of SANCBA records were broken at this year’s show in the largest numbers of Bengalese finch and Fiorino canary ever shown at a national show and by Mr. Fred Barnicoat who competed in his 71st National Show.  A unique occurrence was the 15 various types of turaco to be seen together, with a specimen of the Great Blue (from Cameroon) of Buks Grobbelaar winning best aviary bird on show. The large number of parrots (169) was also most unusual.  A total of 1561 canaries of all types gave a combined singing performance which delighted the many visitors to the show.  A list of show results is appended below.

The show was rounded off with a fun Pet Bird Show on the morning of Saturday 13 July. Although only ten pet parrot-like birds, ranging from Macaws to Cockatiels, were entered by members of the public the standard of birds was extremely high and each received a handsome cash prize.
